Frequently Asked Questions

What you need to know before you book a safari from the coast.

Yes, but pick the park carefully. From Diani, Shimba Hills is about 1 hour away and works well for a day trip. From Malindi, Tsavo East is about 2 hours to the Sala Gate, which makes a day trip possible but tiring. One night inside the park gives you far more time with the animals.

Tsavo East. The Sala Gate is the closest big park entrance to Malindi, and the road is a straight drive on the Tsavo Malindi road. Most guests do 2 or 3 days there.

Two days is enough for Tsavo East from Malindi. Three days lets you add Tsavo West. Four to five days suits a longer route through Tsavo and Amboseli.

The dry months of June to October and January to February are the easiest for spotting animals. The long rains usually fall from March to May and can make park roads muddy. The coast is hot and humid all year.

No vaccine is required for most travellers. A yellow fever certificate is needed if you arrive from a country with yellow fever risk. Malaria tablets are a personal choice, so ask your doctor before you travel. Bring a good insect repellent.

You need a passport valid for at least 6 months and an approved eTA. Apply for the eTA online on the official Kenya government website before you travel.

Most nationalities need a Kenya eTA. Apply online at etakenya.go.ke at least three days before travel.

Wear light layers in neutral colours like beige, khaki, brown and olive green. Avoid black and dark blue, which attract tsetse flies. Pack a warm jacket for early morning drives and closed comfortable shoes.
