5 Day Tsavo East, Tsavo West and Amboseli Safari from Malindi

Your Day-by-Day Itinerary Break Down

This 5 day safari takes you from the coast to three of Kenya’s best parks. You cover Tsavo East, Tsavo West and Amboseli, with a real chance of seeing all of the Big Five along the way. The drive from Malindi to Tsavo East now runs on tarmac, so you spend more time on game drives and less time on the road. We pick you up from your hotel in Malindi, Watamu, Diani or Mombasa and bring you back at the end, so there is no need to fly to Nairobi first.

Day 1

Malindi to Tsavo East

Pickup starts at 06:30 from your hotel in Malindi, Watamu, Mombasa or Diani. The drive to Tsavo East takes around three hours on tarmac road, and we enter the park through Sala Gate. From here you go straight into a game drive, watching for elephants, giraffes, buffalo, lion and the Yatta Plateau, the longest lava flow in the world. You arrive at your lodge around 13:00 for lunch and a short rest. At 16:00 you head back out for an evening game drive before dinner and an overnight stay in the park.

Day 2

Tsavo East to Tsavo West

An early game drive starts at 06:30, before breakfast at the lodge. Around 09:00 you leave Tsavo East and cross into Tsavo West through Tsavo Gate near Manyani, with game viewing on the way. After lunch at your lodge, around 16:00 you set out for Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, a fenced section of the park built to protect the black rhino, one of Africa’s most endangered animals. Dinner and overnight at your lodge or camp in Tsavo West.

Day 3

Tsavo West to Amboseli

After breakfast at 07:00, you stop at Mzima Springs, where clear spring water draws hippos, crocodiles and a wide range of fish and birds. From here the drive continues toward Amboseli, entering through Kimana Gate, with game viewing along the way. You reach your lodge for lunch around 13:00. In the afternoon you rest before a game drive from 16:00 to 18:30, when Amboseli’s light and the view of Mount Kilimanjaro are at their best. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

Day 4

Amboseli National Park

The full day is spent in Amboseli. A morning game drive from 06:30 covers the swamps where elephant herds gather, with Mount Kilimanjaro often visible in the background if the sky is clear. After lunch and a rest, an afternoon game drive from 16:00 covers a different part of the park. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

Day 5

Amboseli to the coast

After breakfast at 07:00, there is a final game drive on the way out of the park, with an optional visit to a Maasai village at your own cost. The return drive to Malindi, Watamu or Diani takes most of the day, so we build in stops for lunch and rest along the way. You arrive back at your hotel in the evening.

Helpful Tips

  • Pack light, neutral-coloured clothing, since safari vehicles have limited luggage space.
  • Bring a hat, sunscreen and insect repellent. Nights can be cool in Amboseli, so pack a light jacket.
  • A pair of binoculars makes a real difference for spotting animals at a distance.
  • Roads inside the parks are dirt and can be dusty or bumpy, so a scarf or buff helps.
  • Carry cash in small notes for tips and any extras at the lodges.
  • Malaria risk exists in this part of Kenya, so speak to your doctor about antimalarial tablets before you travel.

FAQS

Yes. We pick up from Diani, Mombasa, Watamu or Malindi. The drive time to Tsavo East from Diani is a bit longer than from Malindi, and we adjust the day 1 pickup time so you still reach the park in good time.
Tsavo and Amboseli give you a strong chance of seeing elephant, buffalo and lion, and Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary is built for rhino sightings. Leopard is harder to find since it is shy and mostly active at night. No safari can guarantee every sighting, since these are wild animals in an open park.
A 4×4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof, so you can stand and take photos during game drives.
Yes. The Malindi to Tsavo East road was completed and tarmacked in recent years, which cut the old three to four hour drive on dirt road down to around two to three hours.
Yes. We can adjust it to 4 days by dropping one park, or extend it to include Nairobi or a Kenya and Tanzania combined trip.
