Safari Blue Watamu: Full Day Snorkeling and Boat Excursion

Safari Blue Watamu is a full day boat trip on the Kenya coast. You snorkel in Watamu Marine Park, cruise through the Mida Creek mangroves and eat a seafood lunch on Sudi Island.

What to Expect on This Excursion

Snorkeling in Watamu Marine Park

The boat takes you to the coral reef inside the marine park. You snorkel with a mask, fins and a life jacket, and your guide points out the fish and coral. The water is shallow and calm on most days, so first time snorkelers can join.

Dolphin Watching

Between November and March the boat looks for dolphins on the way to the reef. Sightings depend on the day, so we cannot promise them, and we keep a respectful distance from the animals.

Swimming Stop on the Sandbank

After snorkeling the boat stops at a sandbank or beach for a swim and a rest. The exact spot depends on the tide.

Mida Creek Mangrove Cruise

The boat moves into Mida Creek, a protected mangrove creek. You pass through the mangroves and can often see herons, storks and, at times, flamingos.

Seafood Lunch on Sudi Island

Lunch is served on Sudi Island. The menu is usually grilled fish, prawns, lobster, coconut rice and fresh fruit. Tell us about any allergies or vegetarian needs when you book.

Optional Canoe Ride

On Sudi Island you can add a canoe ride through the mangroves for an extra fee, paid on the day.

Good to Know

  • Best season: The trip runs all year. Dolphins are most likely from November to March. The sea can be rougher in the long rains, from April to June.
  • What to bring: Swimwear, a towel, a hat, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen, a dry change of clothes and a small amount of cash for tips.
  • Swimming ability: You do not need to be a strong swimmer. Life jackets are provided and the guide stays with you in the water.
  • Children: Children are welcome. Tell us their ages when you book so we can bring the right life jackets.
  • Tides and weather: These decide the route and the timing, so the order of stops may change on the day.
  • Respect the reef: Do not stand on or touch the coral, and do not feed the fish.
Pick-up area: Hotels in Watamu and Malindi. Staying in Diani or Mombasa is too far for a same day return.
