14 Day Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Island

Your Day-by-Day Itinerary Break Down

This trip splits neatly into two halves, a six day safari through Tanzania’s northern parks, followed by a week unwinding in Zanzibar. It’s a good fit if you want a proper safari without rushing it, plus real beach time afterward rather than a token day or two tacked on at the end.

Day 1

Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport

On arrival, you’ll meet our representative and be transferred to your lodge near Arusha, around 45 minutes away. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

Day 2

Arusha to Tarangire

After breakfast, you drive to Tarangire National Park, around two to two and a half hours away. Tarangire’s baobab trees are one of its defining features, and animals concentrate along the Tarangire River, the only permanent water source in the area. You’ll likely see lion, leopard, elephant and cheetah, among plenty of plains game. You have a half day game drive in the park. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

Day 3

Tarangire to Lake Manyara

After breakfast, you drive to Lake Manyara National Park, a short trip of around 45 minutes to an hour. Set against the Great Rift Valley escarpment, Manyara packs a wide range of habitat into a small park. You’ll see good numbers of elephant, buffalo and giraffe, and should look out for zebra, warthog, impala, Kirk’s dik-dik and waterbuck near the springs, and klipspringer on the escarpment slopes. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

Day 4

Lake Manyara to Ngorongoro

An early start takes you to the Ngorongoro Crater, around two hours away. On arrival, you descend onto the crater floor for a game drive. Because the crater’s walls, around 2,000 feet high, keep most animals from migrating in or out, wildlife stays fairly concentrated here, and you can expect to see lion, elephant, zebra, hippo, flamingo, jackal, various antelope species, and with some luck, one of the crater’s small population of black rhino. Dinner and overnight at your camp on the crater rim.

Day 5

Ngorongoro to Serengeti

After breakfast, you set off for the Serengeti, a drive of around three to four hours. You stop for lunch at a kopje inside the park, one of the granite outcrops scattered across the plains, before continuing deeper in for an afternoon game drive. Dinner and overnight at your camp.

Day 6

Full day of game drives in the Serengeti

You spend the full day exploring the park. Depending on the season and where the migrating herds are, you can expect to see baboon, hippo, antelope, wildebeest, lion, elephant, giraffe and zebra, along with a small, rarely seen population of black rhino concentrated around the Moru Kopjes. Dinner and overnight at your camp.

Day 7

Fly to Zanzibar

After breakfast, you’re transferred to the Seronera airstrip for your flight to Zanzibar, connecting via Arusha. On arrival, you transfer to your beach hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 8

Zanzibar beach time

Four days to relax on Zanzibar’s beaches, with water sports available including snorkelling, scuba diving and boat trips. Dinner and overnight at your beach hotel each night.

Day 9

Day 10

Day 11

Day 12

Transfer to Stone Town

After breakfast, you’re transferred to Stone Town, stopping en route for a spice tour, which covers the island’s spice and herb farms and their traditional uses in cooking, medicine and cosmetics. Dinner and overnight at your hotel in Stone Town.

Day 13

Stone Town tour or private island trip

Choose between a historical tour of Stone Town, taking in sites such as the House of Wonders, the Palace Museum, the Old Arab Fort and the town’s markets and winding alleyways, or a boat trip to Prison Island, Safari Blue, or a private island of your choice. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Day 14

Departure

After breakfast, you’re transferred to the airport for your flight home.
